Robots Can Complete A Wide Variety Of Industrial Operations
Robots can complete a wide variety of industrial operations. They can cut and shape fabricated parts, assemble machinery, drill, make glass, monitor radiation, sort parts, rivet and weld. Some robots are used to investigate hazardous and dangerous environments. An eight-legged, tethered robot named Dante II descended into Mt. Spurr, an active Alaskan volcano 90 miles west of Anchorage, Alaska.
Many toys incorporate robotics. Computer chips make remote-controlled toys possible. Robot kits are available for children to build their own robotic toys. Even daily household chores are now being performed by robots (robotic vacuum cleaners). High school and college students can compete in robot competitions.
NASA has developed a wide array of robotic devices. In 2003, two Martian rovers, Spirit and Opportunity, were launched and landed successfully on Mars in 2004 to collect and analyze Martian soil and rock data.
Robots are currently used to collect stardust, fix orbiting satellites and spacecraft, and explore sunken ocean vessels. NASA’s ANTS project involves designing a tetrahedral rover that will be used in planetary and asteroid exploration.
